Ep.1 You Say You Trust Your Body… So Why Are You Still So Scared?
By Casey El Kalal | Muslim Doula | Mamacub Wellness
If I asked you, “Do you trust your body was made for birth?” what would your answer be?
When I asked this question on Instagram, around 80% of people said yes.
But then I asked another question:
Would you choose a hospital birth with full medical support, or a natural birth with minimal interventions?
The responses made me stop and think.
Many of the same people who said they trusted their body also said they would feel safer with full medical support.
Now, before you keep reading, I want to make something very clear.
This isn’t about whether you choose a hospital birth, a home birth, or whether you decide to have every intervention available to you. There is absolutely no judgement here. As a Muslim doula in Western Sydney, my role is never to tell you how to birth.
My role is to help you understand why you make the decisions you do.
Because sometimes, what we call “trust” is actually fear wearing a different name.
Were You Taught to Trust Your Body?
The truth is, very few of us grow up hearing positive birth stories.
Instead, we’re surrounded by stories of emergencies, trauma, unbearable pain and fear.
Movies show birth as an emergency.
Friends often share their most traumatic experiences.
Social media can leave you feeling overwhelmed with information and worst-case scenarios.
Without even realising it, these stories begin to shape the way you think about pregnancy and birth.
Over time, fear quietly becomes your normal.
Not loud panic.
Just a quiet voice that whispers:
“What if my body can’t do it?”
“What if something goes wrong?”
“What if I need someone else to take over?”
Those thoughts don’t make you weak.
They make you human.
Birth Is More Than Just Physical
One of the biggest misconceptions about birth preparation is that it’s only about learning breathing techniques, birth positions or what to pack in your hospital bag.
Those things matter.
But your mindset matters just as much.
Birth is physical, emotional, hormonal, neurological and spiritual.
When you feel safe, your body responds differently.
When you’re overwhelmed by fear, your body responds differently too.
Your nervous system plays an enormous role in labour.
This is why building birth confidence isn’t simply about positive affirmations.
It’s about creating genuine trust within yourself.
Trust Doesn’t Mean Doing It Alone
One thing I hear often is:
“If I trust my body, does that mean I shouldn’t have support?”
Absolutely not.
Support is one of the most important parts of pregnancy and birth.
Whether that’s your husband, your midwife, your obstetrician, your doula or your family.
The difference is this:
Are they supporting you…
Or are they replacing your confidence?
There’s a huge difference between being guided by informed professionals while remaining connected to your own instincts…
And feeling like your body has no voice at all.
Support should strengthen your confidence.
Not replace it.
As a Muslim Woman, There’s Another Layer
As Muslim women, we also have something incredibly beautiful to hold onto.
Tawakkul.
Tawakkul isn’t ignoring medical care.
It isn’t pretending fear doesn’t exist.
It means taking the means that Allah has provided while placing your ultimate trust in Him.
That also means recognising that Allah created your body with incredible wisdom.
Your body was not designed to fail you.
Sometimes birth unfolds differently than we hoped.
Sometimes interventions become necessary.
But trusting Allah and trusting the body He created can exist alongside accepting whatever outcome He has written for us.
Building Birth Confidence Starts Today
If fear has been sitting quietly in your heart, you don’t have to ignore it.
In fact, acknowledging it is often the first step towards healing.
Instead of asking yourself,
“Why am I so scared?”
Try asking,
“Where did this fear come from?”
That one question can completely change your pregnancy journey.
Because fear isn’t something you’re born with.
It is something you learn.
And if it can be learned…
It can also be unlearned.
